Affected Public

A network of more than two million miles of pipeline transports energy products across the country to homes, businesses, and industrial customers. Pipelines transport vital energy products that are an integral part of our daily life. This network of underground pipelines consists of three primary types of pipelines: gathering linestransmission lines, and distribution lines, which crisscross our nation.

We may be near pipelines every day but not be aware of their existence. However, pipeline operators must advise affected stakeholders on how to live and work safely near pipelines, including a pipeline’s location, the use of a One-Call notification system prior to excavation, and how to recognize, respond to, and report pipeline emergencies.

Learn more about what the public can do to impact pipeline safety by understanding which pipeline operators are in your area, the products transported, and what to do in the event of a leak.
